Merge PDFs on iPhone and Android
You do not need another app. Your phone's browser can combine PDF files by itself — here is exactly where each file goes and how to keep the page order right.
The short version
- Open the merge tool in Safari (iPhone/iPad) or Chrome (Android).
- Tap Choose PDF files and pick your documents from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Downloads.
- Use the up and down arrows to set the order — easier than dragging on a small screen.
- Tap Merge PDFs and open the downloaded file from your Downloads folder.
Everything happens on the phone itself. Your PDFs are not uploaded, which matters when the documents are payslips, ID scans or contracts.
Step by step on iPhone and iPad
- Open Safari and go to the merge page.
- Tap Choose PDF files. iOS opens the document picker. Tap Browse at the bottom to move between iCloud Drive, On My iPhone and other storage such as Dropbox or Google Drive if those apps are installed.
- Select the PDFs. In the picker you can tap several files in a row to select them together, then confirm.
- Order the files. The list shows page counts and file sizes. Use the arrows to move a document up or down, or tap Sort A–Z if your scans are named in sequence.
- Tap Merge PDFs. Safari saves the result to Downloads, visible in the Files app under iCloud Drive → Downloads.
Tip for iPad users: rotating to landscape gives the file list more room, and a connected trackpad or mouse lets you drag files to reorder them just like on a desktop.
Step by step on Android
- Open Chrome and go to the merge page.
- Tap Choose PDF files. The Android file picker appears, usually showing Recent first.
- Find the right folder. If your PDFs are not listed, tap the menu inside the picker and choose Downloads, or switch to the Images/Drive tab and pick them there.
- Select and confirm. Long-press the first file, then tap the others to add them to the selection.
- Order, then merge. Use the arrow buttons and tap Merge PDFs. Chrome downloads the file to your Downloads folder; a notification at the top of the screen opens it.
From a Google Drive folder, you can also open Drive in Chrome, long-press a PDF, choose Open with and complete the merge in the browser — but selecting files in the picker is usually quicker.

Tips for merging on a phone
- Name your files before you start. Sorting and ordering is far easier when scans are called
01-invoice.pdf,02-receipt.pdfand so on. - Merge in smaller batches. Phones have less memory than laptops. If a batch of large scans feels slow, merge three files at a time and combine the results afterwards.
- Keep the tab open until the download finishes. Switching apps mid-merge can suspend the browser and interrupt the download on some Android devices.
- Share straight from Files. Once the merged PDF is saved, you can send it to Mail, Messages, WhatsApp or Drive without re-opening the tool.
Common problems
“The PDF I need is greyed out”
The file is probably stored in an app that does not expose it to the system picker. Open the file's app (for example Gmail or Drive), export or save the PDF to Downloads first, then choose it again.
“Nothing happens when I tap Merge”
Check that at least one file has finished loading — each row shows its page count when it is ready. If a row is red, that file could not be read; remove it and try a different copy. Encrypted PDFs that need a password to open cannot be merged in a browser.
“The download opened instead of saving”
On iOS, tap the share icon in the preview and choose Save to Files. On Android, open Chrome's Downloads list and use the three-dot menu to save or share the file.

Do I need to install an app to merge PDFs on my phone?
No. A modern mobile browser can merge PDF files by itself. Safari on iOS and iPadOS and Chrome on Android both support the file access needed, so you can pick documents straight from Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or your Downloads folder.
Where does the merged PDF go on an iPhone?

Why can't I select my PDF on Android?
The Android file picker opens in Recent by default, which sometimes hides documents stored in cloud apps. Tap the menu inside the picker and switch to Downloads, or use the Google Drive tab, then select your PDFs there.
Can I merge large scanned PDFs on a phone?
Phones have less memory than desktop computers, so a very large batch of scans can feel slow or fail. Merge scans in groups of two or three, or move the job to a computer, where a browser tab can work with far more memory.
